Installing a D-Link DFE-530TX+ network interface card on a customer's G5 with OS 10.4.7, I encountered a problem, in that the installer set the ownership and permissions on the kernel extension (driver) so that Tiger refused to load the extension. A popup would appear saying the the extension was not installed correctly and that it would not be loaded. The problem is that the installer sets the ownership on the kernel extension files to that of the user who installed the driver.

The files need to be owned by user root, group wheel. Also, directories should have drwxr-xr-x permissions (755). If you know what you're doing, you can correct this from the Terminal App by going into the /System/Library/Extensions folder and using chown and chmod to fix the ownership and permission bits.

If I remember the name of the kext folder/package correctly, the commands would go something like this (from memory because it was a customer's machine, and I'm not there now). Cd /System/Library/Extensions sudo chown -R root:wheel dlfext.kext sudo chmod 755 dlfext.kext cd dlfext.kext sudo chmod 755 `find.type d -print` # # end commands # The part I don't remember for sure, is the exact name of the.kext file. Substitute the correct name for 'dlfext.kext' wherever it appears. You may not want to attempt this, if you have no idea what you are doing. The quote char used around the `find.type d -print` command is the one found on the key with the tilde in the upper left of the US keyboard.

I hope this helps someone. Feel free to contact me (doug@oakstreetsoftware.com) for clarification. Please don't leave questions for me here; I may never see them.

However, I'm a consultant; it's not always my call. I just wanted to share what I had discovered, so someone else might benefit. Your tip would be best submitted at as the info would remain publicly available. Where as this thread will be archived in a few months. I also do some mac consultancy and only recommend using tried and tested products that work out of the box without the need for installing extra drivers. Realtek chipsets have worked for the longest time and are found on the the cheapest of generic NICS.
